[OOM] Talk with Ensign Rager
It has been a normal, uneventful night shift. Today will not be completely normal for Data, however—Captain Picard has all but ordered that his second officer take the majority of the day off, pointing out that Data hardly ever takes any time to relax. Data resisted the impulse to remind the captain that he has no need of rest, as that observation has never changed the captain's mind in the past in regards to this issue.
Data is relieved of his night watch as usual by Commander Riker. While he is making his report, he notices Ensign Rager take her usual seat at the helm, and is reminded of something. It is rare that he and Ensign Rager are off-duty at the same time, but today that will be the case. Perhaps he should take advantage of it, since there was something he wanted to ask her.
Before he leaves the bridge, Data approaches her seat at the helm.
"Ensign. May I speak with you after you have completed your shift?"

In the meantime, Data spends his day indulging in his various hobbies, and spending time with other senior officers when they are off-duty. He arrives in Ten Forward about three minutes before Ensign Rager's shift will be completed.
He will be waiting at one of the tables.

It's fair to say Sariel spends a couple of the quiet minutes of her watch wondering just what mistake she might have made, then admonishing herself for being paranoid. Only a couple minutes, however; she has a shift. That takes precedence.
She's in Ten Forward about five minutes after it's over, give or take the time it took Tess Allenby to relieve her. She can't keep the faintly nervous expression off her face as she approaches Data's table, no matter how she tries.
"You wanted to see me, sir?" She doesn't go as far as 'reporting as ordered', but give her an indication and she just might.
OOC: Sorry for the slow there, I has a new computer!

"I apologize for taking your time, Ensign. This may be a short conversation, but I wanted to ask you something."
It is often difficult to tell with Data whether or not he is being formal--he does not have any mannerisms which would indicate "casual." The only sign he gives that this might not be official business is that he asks, "Would you like something to drink first?"
[OOC: Ooh, that's exciting! And no problem. ^__^]

She's still looking a shade uncertain, though natural reserve does help in masking at least a little of it. "... Yes sir?" Ahem. Vocal hints at uncertainty are a touch harder to keep hidden.

He pauses-- one might almost mistake it for hesitation-- before asking simply, "Does the term 'Milliways' mean anything to you?"

Later, she'll remember that this is clear confirmation that the Data who's found the bar is her own reality's version. Later. Nothing so analytical is going through her head right now, though. It's a long, long second before she turns her head, meets his gaze. Her voice sounds tiny in her own ears, not to mention the tiniest bit shaky.
"Yes, sir."
She acts as though she's expecting a reprimand. Maybe she is.

Sariel looks slightly sheepish as she replies, but he hasn't reprimanded her yet, he hasn't called her out on anything, and that seems as though it counts for something. "When Captain Kirk mentioned you to me, I thought much the same thing, sir." Beat. Two. "To confirm--yes, sir. I have."
She doesn't explain in greater detail just yet, but whether that's a touch of the same uncertainty or simply her waiting to be asked isn't clear. Probably both.

"I am curious," he says, folding his hands on the table. "Why did you choose not to report the existence of Milliways to any of your fellow officers?"
It is not a reprimand, merely a question-- after all, Data also refrained from making an official report. He is simply curious to hear if Sariel's reasoning for doing so was similar to his own.
Then again, it is perhaps difficult to tell from Data's tone of voice whether he is reprimanding her or not. He so rarely sounds stern, even when he is offering criticism.

"If I had reported its existence, it would likely have sparked an in-depth investigation at best, sir." Pause. "At worst--" she sounds a little more the junior in junior officer than usual for a second, a little more the shy, thoughtful kid born with a need to fly. "I'm not certain I would have been believed."
no subject
What he says next might alleviate some of that uncertainty, however. "Those were my conclusions as well," he tells her. "It occurred to me that allowing Milliways to be overrun with Starfleet officers wishing to study such a fascinating temporal-spatial anamoly might be a violation of the Prime Directive. And because the appearance of Milliways is somewhat unpredictable, I also considered the possibility of not being believed, and having difficulty showing evidence to support my claim."
After a short pause, he suggests, "Perhaps we should continue to keep this information between ourselves."
no subject
"If you believe that to be best, sir." Beat. "Unless someone else aboard ship discovers a door."
Who's to say someone won't? Two on a ship of a thousand people have already...

It is possible that the Picard who visited Milliways is from a slightly different universe, so Data does not plan on saying anything about it to him.
no subject
Pause. Little bit longer. "Could he have been a version of Captain Picard from a closely-related reality?" Or their own, who's now keeping his visit quiet exactly as Commander Data and herself have... but she isn't voicing that possibility aloud. It's not her place, somehow.
