"Yes," Data replies, then gestures to the chair. "Please sit down.

"I apologize for taking your time, Ensign. This may be a short conversation, but I wanted to ask you something."

It is often difficult to tell with Data whether or not he is being formal--he does not have any mannerisms which would indicate "casual." The only sign he gives that this might not be official business is that he asks, "Would you like something to drink first?"
