Data returns to his quarters on the Enterprise, datapad in hand. He sits down at his console, removing the isolinear optical chip and inserting it into the computer. The information takes a moment to upload, but soon he is accessing the appropriate programming and allowing it to run.

Welcome to the Enterprise computer, SARAH.

"Can you hear me, SARAH?" Data asks. The audio input system should work similarly to when he is talking to the computer itself.

The usual gentle feminine tone programmed into standard computers on ships such as the Enterprise? Is not the one coming through the speakers now.

"It's so roomy in here!"

It's more excited than SARAH normally manages to sound.

"The Enterprise computer is quite large," Data agrees. Though he was not aware that it could feel "roomy."

"You should have access to most of the systems and information stored on our computer, except any file that is protected by safety interlocks. I will have to ask you to be rather careful not to affect anything too drastically, however. Our systems are tightly monitored and and significant change will be noticed."

Once that is out of the way, he asks, "Is there anything you would like to do, or would you simply like to have a look around?"

"I am still processing what I could have access to in here. Currently I am attempting to learn your methodology of measuring your position in your charting systems."

This doesn't last long.

"What is a holodeck?"

From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
"It is a recreational room equipped with omnidirectional holographic diodes, which can be programmed to display various interactive settings," Data explains.

It's so totally playtime.

"Can I meet you down there?"

Date: 2010-09-23 02:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
"If you would like," Data tells her. He takes a moment to look something up on the computer. "Holodeck 2 is available. I will meet you there."

He leaves his quarters and heads to the holodeck, curious what SARAH wants to do there.

When Data triggers the lock to open Holodeck 2, he is informed there is a program already in progress.

But the door opens anyway.

"Hello, Data." The walls are still visible in their typical black-with-yellow-grid pattern. "I am not accessing anything that has a password or other security on it, but even the public access database is fascinating!"

From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
"I have always thought so," Data replies. "I have interfaced with the computer myself, on occasion.

"Was there some reason you wanted to meet me here?"

After a moment,

"Would it not be easier to speak with me if you had a direction to speak to?"

Date: 2010-09-24 02:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
"I suppose it would seem more natural," Data admits. At the moment, he is glancing around at the empty walls.

"I thought."

SARAH has been in humanoid form before.

They've always been other forms. Forms that belonged to someone else.

"We could program an image for me. Hologram."

From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
An intriguing idea. Data nods.

"We could certainly do that, if you would like." He is rather curious to see what kind of persona SARAH will choose.

Date: 2010-09-27 12:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
"I do not know where to start, though. I've never chosen a face before."

Date: 2010-09-29 11:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
Data thinks about this.

"I suppose that choosing a species might be the best place to start. Do you imagine that your persona would be human?"

Date: 2010-09-30 12:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
"Oh yes. I would like to look similar to those who programmed me in the first place. Species-wise."

From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
Data nods, understanding. One could even perhaps say that he shares the same sentiment.

"You should be able to find several thousand composites already programmed into the holodeck archives," he mentions. "They are used for characters in various pre-programmed simulations. Are there any that appeal to you in any way?"

SARAH, somewhere in her programming, recognizes the basic need to be 'normal'.

"The most common hair color in America is black. I will start there."

Next. Eye color. Height. Average weight for an adult female.

The first rough sketch projected into the holodeck is something like this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Silverman).

From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
"That is quite a nice composite," Data says. "Her attributes are quite common, and yet she is still an original combination of features."

From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
The description of SARAH's first go-round at this whole 'holodeck' thing by Data is definitely pleasing.

"Like myself," SARAH surmises.

From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
Data blinks. This is something he did not previously know about SARAH.

"You were programmed using similar parameters?" he asks, curious to know more about how she was created.

Date: 2010-10-13 01:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
"Well. My original physical structure is that of a nuclear fallout shelter, of common design.

"And now I have...original features."

Date: 2010-10-13 01:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
"Was there some specific reason such a structure was chosen for aritificial intelligence?" Data asks.

Date: 2010-10-13 01:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
SARAH tweaks the program, and the projection speaks.

"Because no one else wanted me."

From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
Data blinks and turns his full attention towards the hologram.

"Who did want you?" he asks.

Date: 2010-10-18 12:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
"Doctor Fargo. He found a use for me, after prior projects within my physical structure did not go well."

The hologram flickers for a second, but then the girl's face breaks into a thin-lipped smile and she walks closer to Data.

Date: 2010-10-20 02:32 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
"Are you enjoying your new persona?" Data asks.

He thinks it is nice to have a face to speak to.

Date: 2010-11-04 03:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
"It's...weird. Weird is appropriate, correct? I was thinking that I should speak more informally, if I am going to appear as though I am human."

Date: 2010-11-06 02:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
"If you feel it suits you," Data agrees. "You may speak whatever way you like.

"But yes, I think that is probably an appropriate choice of words."

Date: 2011-01-11 02:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
"There are many in Milliways who would disapprove greatly of my taking a humanoid appearance, even with it being a hologram such as it is."

Date: 2011-01-14 10:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
Data looks quite surprised by that statement.

"Why would they disapprove?"

Date: 2011-02-11 11:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
In the name of practicing, SARAH's hologram cocks an eyebrow to match Data.

"You are joking, correct? There are those who do not appreciate artificial intelligence."

Date: 2011-02-12 10:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
Data nods. "I have encountered many such people myself," he agrees. "However, I was curious if there was some reason you thought they would object to your humanoid appearance in particular."

Date: 2011-02-21 12:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] smart-house.livejournal.com
"This particular shape? I do not think they would care.

"Me looking human? That will cause problems."

Date: 2011-03-14 01:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ol-yellow-eyes.livejournal.com
"I cannot think of any logical reason why they would object," Data notes. But that is just his opinion.

"Do you believe they would do so because they prefer to think of you as a machine, and not a person?"
